The Christy story begins in 1850 with the invention of the towel as we know it today…

Henry Christy returned to England from Constantinople with a sample of looped pile fabric which was new to the Western World. After studying the fabric along with his inventor brother, a machine was created which allowed terry towelling to be produced on a large scale.

A year later, the first terry towel was in production and this was shown at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, was presented with a set of these, she immediately ordered more and the rest as they say is history…

In 1951 Christy celebrated its centenary, 100 years of the Royal Turkish towel. We still proudly carry an updated contemporary version of The Royal Turkish Towel in our collection today and it continues to be our most luxurious towel as it has for over 160 years.

Special towels were produced to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and then again to celebrate the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

In 1988, Christy became the official towel supplier The Championships, Wimbledon. It is no surprise that the Christy towel used on Centre Court by the players has now become an iconic part of The Championships.

Our strong knowledge of cotton gained from over 160 years in textiles has meant our bed linen is now as well regarded as our towels. All lovingly designed in our studio in Cheadle, our bedding boasts high thread counts, intricate embroidery and beautifully woven designs in a combination of classic and contemporary styling.

Our loyal Christy customers associate us with a style that is inherently British and know us as a brand that has stood the test of time whilst evolving to meet the needs of our customers. By embracing new yarn technologies, such as Hygro Cotton, and by producing season on-trend designs we ensure we continue to innovate.

We are as excited by our brand today as our founders were in 1850 and we look forward to the future with as much enthusiasm for the Christy brand as ever…
